Roundtable organized by the Geneva Geostrategic Observatory and Alliance Suisse-Maroc

« Tolerance is not concession, condescension, or indulgence.
Tolerance is, above all, an active attitude prompted by recognition of the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others ».

Art. 1.2 of the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance, UNESCO, 16 November 1995

Marking the 28th anniversary of the International Day of Tolerance, the Geneva Geostrategic Observatory and Alliance Suisse-Maroc organize a discussion about best practices and policies which promote trust, respect, and solidarity between ethnic, cultural and religious communities.

In the heart of inter-faith diplomacy, the Ecumenical Center in Geneva, an international group of historians, human rights experts, diplomats, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations, leaders of different religious communities, will share testimonies of living together rooted in a millennial history. These traditions inspire norms and practical initiatives which set up the framework for peace dialogue, respect for minority rights, freedom of expression and belief, and stimulate entrepreneurship and creativity.

Special attention will be paid to the “Plan of Action on the prohibition of advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination” adopted in Rabat on October 5, 2012. More than a decade later, this document remains a reference for many countries in Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Speakers at the Round Table will discuss its application and suggest ways forward. These recommendations will be included in the “Geneva Appeal Against Hate and Extremism” to be presented at the end of the round table.
