Women play a crucial role in the electoral process, and have an important and multidimensional point of view. However, despite this, they face many challenges and obstacles that prevent them from participating effectively in the political and electoral process, as we clearly see the most important obstacles facing Libya’s transition to an inclusive democracy is the low level of political participation of women and their limited representation in decision-making positions, whether elected or appointed and Because civil society organizations have a prominent role in empowering and encouraging women’s political and electoral participation.

The Atwar Foundation for Research and Community Development was established in 2015 and has been working since then to build peace, reach solutions and support the electoral process. It recently launched a project aimed at promoting the effective participation of women in the upcoming elections. This project focused on raising awareness and defending women’s rights through the rehabilitation and empowerment of Libyan women, and provides comprehensive training programs that promote knowledge of their rights and the most important laws that are important to protect these rights.

The main goal of the “Community Leader” project is the development of social leaders through the training of 12 women-led civil society organizations, and the implementation of 24 activists through which the knowledge capabilities of women’s civil society organizations can be strengthened, especially with regard to the electoral process. After the launch of the first training for the project, the project was implemented in various cities, most notably Benghazi, Sabha, Zuwara, Tobruk, Jufrah and Tripoli, where it covered more than 15 municipalities. One of the first cities and municipalities to implement this project (the community leader) is the city of Benghazi under the title (strong, despite the difficulties) to enhance women’s participation in municipal council elections.

Atwar Foundation continues to continue its efforts in promoting women’s political participation and democratic transition in Libya, By providing training, raising awareness and advocating for women’s rights, the organization strives to create a more inclusive and equitable society where women have equal opportunities to contribute to decision-making processes.
